While face masks are crucial for the protection of oneself and others from Covid, people who wear glasses find it hard and annoying when fog disrupts their vision. It is a problem that prevails in colder environments as the warm breath condenses on the glasses. How do you carry out basic routine tasks without having to rid either your face mask or your eyeglasses? Here is how.
The first way of achieving the milestone is disallowing your breath to reach the glasses so condensation cannot take place on them. When the top area of a mask leaks your breath, it not only reaches your eyeglasses and impairs your vision through a fog but increases the chances of your breath reaching other people as well, posing health safety risks.
You can physically block the air using one of the following ways:
Most masks come with a seal that is designed to serve the exact same purpose. However, almost all of them fail to do their job. A metal nose piece, however, works wonders and fulfills the requirement effectively. However, it does cause people to look at you a lot, and some even giggle or smile, which can feel a little embarrassing. Professional surgery masks are a better alternative, but some people might find them a bit expensive.
The other way you can achieve clear vision with a face mask and eyeglasses on is by not letting condensation happen. You can do that with the use of chemicals. Getting a coating on your glasses of a substance that decreases the surface tension of water to disallow fogging is a sure-shot way of doing away with the problem.
P.S. It is highly recommended that you check with your eye specialist first before putting anything on your eyeglasses. If there is already a coating of some sort on them, it might get damaged.
Another way to ensure fogging does not happen is to keep your glasses crystal clear. Wash your lenses with water and soap, and condensation will not have a host to form on. Without dirt and oil, condensation cannot take place, and you can enjoy fog-free vision (for as long as dirt and oil do not accumulate again). Wiping your glasses with a piece of cloth is not as effective for this purpose because it does not clean the glasses of dirt and oil as well as water and soap do.
There are many anti-fog sprays available in the market that you can use. Some of them are not as effective as they claim to be, but they still do the job to some extent.
Keeping your glasses clean is not just good for battling fogging but for your eye health as well. If you cannot frequently wash your glasses with soap and water, check with your eye doctor for an application of chemical coating. If they do not allow for that, go for a combination of a mask with a solid metal piece to close off air passage and the use of an anti-fog spray to tackle the little air that does reach your eyeglasses.
